Health Care Reform and The Impact

The Supreme Court has announced Health Care Reform (HCR)?is here to stay.

Leaving the political aspect alone, what does this really mean for employers?? Do you keep your grandfathered status, how do you handle benefits for your salaried versus hourly employees, consideration of new funding options (such as self insurance), etc.

The most important outcome of HCR is that it created a level of focus and energy on healthcare that we haven't seen before.??It is widely believed, more government will not solve the problem of spiraling healthcare cost.? But with the reform?it is exciting to see new approaches in the delivery of health benefits.

Employers are beginning to embrace the concept of rewarding their members for positive behavior. ?This is the transition from the traditional Wellness concept of completing a Health Risk Appraisal to Population Health Management where members are rewarded for taking action to improving their health, e.g., becoming compliant with medication, lowering their BMI, etc

The health delivery system is being revamped with the rollout of the Patient Medical Home Model. ?This is a return to the future approach where the primary care provider will be the main coordinator of the health delivery and the provider networks will be based on which providers have better quality of care versus having every available provider.

While the next few years are going to present a number of challenges with compliance and more government regulations, they will also present an opportunity to get all parties (employers, employees, consultants, providers and carriers) involved and working together to truly make an impact on the cost of healthcare.
